Anti Wrinkle Injections

Muscles underneath the skin cause folds and creases on the surface layers of the skin that eventually develop into wrinkles.

What are Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

Anti-wrinkle injections deliver botulinum toxin to specific areas of the face in order to temporarily relax those muscles, leaving a smoother (and thus younger) appearance.

While wrinkles are a normal part of the facial ageing process that happens to us all, some people find that for one reason or another, certain lines and creases in the face negatively impact their self-confidence.

This might be because wrinkles make them appear older or more tired than they feel on the inside, or there may be other factors that negatively affect them – for example, they might often be asked why they are always frowning and in a bad mood. There are also individuals who might feel passed over in business settings, as they compete for jobs with younger colleagues; or as though the appearance of facial ageing limits their options socially.

Although representations in the media may make it seem that concerns about wrinkles are superficial, stem from vanity, and only affect women, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Both men and women can be negatively impacted by the appearance of wrinkles, and the effects can be far-reaching, interfering with their daily lives in more ways than simply when they’re looking in the mirror.

Contrary to their comedic portrayal in film and television, the goal of anti-wrinkle injections is not to paralyse the face or leave a person looking unnatural; but instead to restore a natural-looking refreshed appearance, using a precise medication dosage customised to the musculature of an individual’s face.

Anti-wrinkle injections might also be called ‘wrinkle relaxing treatments,’ ‘wrinkle reducing injections,’ or ‘toxin,’ and they are commonly referred to as Botox®, after the brand name of the drug - although not all anti-wrinkle injections are exactly the same. At Derma Reading, we only use Botox® injections.

Because the treatment is considered ‘cosmetic’ by most people, it is far less stigmatised than in the past, and may even be glamorised by some. It’s therefore important to note that in the UK, loopholes in regulation has allowed unscrupulous practices to be advertised and performed by unethical or unqualified practitioners. Anti-wrinkle injections should only ever be administered by a medical expert in a sterile clinical setting.

While anti-wrinkle injections can have a significant positive impact on a person’s self-confidence, they are not suitable for everyone. This is why before undergoing any treatment, it is essential to first have a consultation with the dermatologist, whose expertise in the medical treatment of the skin can best determine whether it will be suitable and effective, and who can perform the treatment safely for the best outcomes.

What is the Benefit of Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

The removal or improvement of wrinkles can help to improve self-confidence, while restoring a smoother, more rejuvenated appearance to the skin.

In contrast to cosmetic creams and beauty treatments that usually focus on the superficial layers of the skin to make wrinkles look less prominent for a few hours or days; anti-wrinkle injections directly target the muscles under the skin, and are far more effective – usually costing about the same, or less, than many expensive ‘anti-ageing’ beauty therapies.

Anti-wrinkle injections have minimal downtime and can often be performed in as little as 15 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated. An appointment can often be carried out discreetly during a lunch break.

The effects of anti-wrinkle treatment usually last for 2-4 months, and over a longer period of time, most people require fewer treatments in order to maintain the effect, as the muscles causing wrinkles are no longer able to contract as strongly.

Who are Anti-Wrinkle Injections Suitable For?

Patients wishing to minimise the appearance of wrinkles would be potential candidates to undergo anti-wrinkle injections, however, not all patients are medically suitable for treatment; or they may have to wait before they can safely undergo the procedure.

Those who might not be suitable for treatment with anti-wrinkle injections include people;

  • Who have skin infections and some other skin conditions;
  • Who have underlying medical conditions;
  • Who have neuromuscular disorders, such as multiple sclerosis or myasthenia gravis;
  • Who have certain allergies, particularly to eggs, or cow’s milk protein;
  • Who are taking certain medications;
  • Who are pregnant or breastfeeding;
  • Who do not need anti-wrinkle treatment, for example, because of their age.

Whether the appearance of lines and wrinkles are relatively recent, or they have been present for some time, treatment with anti-wrinkle injections performed by a dermatologist is an effective solution for many people.

Anti-wrinkle injections may also be combined with other treatments, such as dermal filler or prescription creams that work to counteract deep creases that remain even after the muscle is relaxed.

What is the Process of Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

Prior to undergoing anti-wrinkle injections, you shouldn’t have to prepare much, but if you are taking certain medications, or have underlying medical conditions, your dermatologist will advise you of any special considerations prior to your appointment.

It’s best to avoid consuming alcohol or taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory tablets (such as ibuprofen) for at least 24 hours before treatment with antiwrinkle injections since they might cause complications like bleeding or bruising. Additionally, any makeup will need to be removed from the areas to be treated, and you shouldn’t use concealer directly after having injections, so you may want to keep that in mind when planning your day.

Some people may be uncomfortable or anxious about needles or have a history of reactions like dizziness or fainting when they have previously had injections or IV treatment. If this is the case, it will be helpful to advise the clinic when booking your appointment or to let the dermatologist know beforehand, so that they can make you more comfortable.

To determine whether you are a suitable candidate for treatment, you will first undergo a consultation with the dermatologist, who will take your medical history and examine the area to be treated.

You may be asked to make certain facial expressions, like frowning or smiling, so that the dermatologist can see how the musculature is working underneath your skin. They will also explain all of the potential side-effects, to enable you to decide whether the injections are the right treatment option for you.

If it is suitable to proceed, the area to be treated will be cleaned with an alcohol wipe, and sometimes the dermatologist might make tiny marks to indicate injection sites using a sterile pencil. These marks will not be visible after treatment.

The dermatologist, or in some instances, a highly-specialised dermatology nurse will then administer the Botox® injections in specific doses that correspond to the strength of the muscles in various parts of the face. These injections may feel like a sharp scratch, but they are not usually painful, and they don’t normally require any anaesthetic beforehand.

You will be given follow-up care instructions on what to expect and what to avoid after your treatment, and it is important to follow these instructions to the letter.

Usually, the patient can leave the clinic straight away after, unless they are experiencing dizziness, in which case they may remain in the waiting room until they are feeling better.

The results of anti-wrinkle injections can take 1-2 weeks to fully take effect in individuals who have never previously had them, however, patients undergoing subsequent toxin treatment are likely to see the results more quickly.

What are the Risks and Issues of Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

While anti-wrinkle injections administered by a dermatologist are quite safe and effective, it is possible to have complications, and in most cases, they would be minor – such as;

  • Bleeding;
  • Bruising;
  • Tenderness or swelling at the sites of injection;
  • Infection

If you have underlying medical conditions or are regularly taking medications, it is essential that you let your dermatologist know when they take your medical history during a consultation, since they might mean you are more susceptible to certain side effects.

Some people can experience dizziness after injections, and it may be beneficial to rest in the waiting room or have a cup of tea following your treatment until this regulates.

In rare cases, anti-wrinkle injections can cause facial asymmetry, which is usually temporary.

It is extremely rare for anti-wrinkle treatment administered by a dermatologist to cause serious complications, such as overall muscle weakness, difficulty speaking or swallowing vision problems, or the loss of bladder control, however, if you do have any of these symptoms either in the hours or weeks after treatment, seek emergency medical attention.

What is the Recovery Time & Outcome for Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

If you are suitable for treatment with Botox® injections, and they are the right option for you, the procedure usually takes about 15 minutes, and any redness at the sites of injection usually disappear within 1-2 hours.

The full effects of the treatment are visible after 2 weeks, and you will need to undergo further treatment to maintain the effects. How soon you’ll need to undergo further treatment depends on several factors, including the strength of your facial muscles. Every individual is different, but the effects normally last 2-4 months.

Whatever your needs, you can rest assured that Derma will provide the very best care for your skin, with access to the latest research and treatments.
