Acne Treatments

Acne is a very common condition that affects most adolescents, as well as some adults; and can also occur in adults – even those who have previously never had issues.

While acne can vary in severity (from a few spots appearing once in a while; to prolonged, significant issues that leave deep scarring) and the condition can present in different areas of the body, generally, all forms of acne can have a detrimental impact on self-confidence.

Here at Derma, we offer a range of treatment options for patients suffering with acne and acne scarring, and are committed to helping each patient find a personalised solution for their acne concerns. If you are investigating treatment options, no matter how mild or severe your acne may be, we recommend having a consultation with one of our dermatologists, who can discuss which treatment plan would suit you best.

Please find below our treatment options:

Mild acne

Mild acne usually presents with a combination of open and closed comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules (small, tender red bumps) and pustules (white or yellow spots). When these are fewer in number, the acne is termed mild although the psychological effects must be recognised as they can be just as problematic as in moderate or severe acne. Treatment solutions are normally topical products such as face wash, Benzoyl peroxide, topical antibiotics or retinoids.

Acne products at Derma - We offer a range of skincare products such as specialised cleansers, serums and moisturisers.

Mild to moderate acne

Treatments for mild to moderate acne include:

  • Topical products - Combination creams such as Epiduo gel or Duac gel
  • Oral antibiotics – Usually tetracyclines such as Lymecycline or doxycycline, macrolides or trimethoprim
  • Combined Oral Contraceptive - Where appropriate, the contraceptive pill such as Dianette can be considered
  • Venue Versa acne treatment - Venus Versa uses Intense Pulsed Light with SmartPulse technology to treat both the underlying cause and the visible symptoms of acne. This gold standard acne treatment is both gentle but hugely effective and provides long term, visible results.

Severe acne

Isotretinoin - isotretinoin is a prescribed medication for severe acne. It works by reducing the amount of sebum (natural oil) produced in the skin, thus reducing the likelihood of blocked pores, thereby reducing acne. Isotretinoin, whilst effective, has many side effects and close management is required during treatment. Isotretinoin can only be prescribed by a dermatologist.

Acne Scarring

If you have suffered with acne in the past, and have been left with scarring, we can offer treatment with our Venus Versa device for acne scarring.

The Venus Versa acne scarring treatment works by using a NanoFractional Radio Frequency and SmartScan technology to stimulate the fibroblasts in the skin to rebuild collagen. The results are improved skin texture and reduced skin damage.

Collagen supplements - collagen supplements can be taken to help mend and rebuild damage caused to the skin from acne scarring. The collagen will help to fill the scar wounds from within.
